On July 24, 2010, thousands of people around the world recorded videos of their lives to take part in Life in a Day, a cinematic experiment to document a single day on earth. From more than 4,500 hours of footage recorded and uploaded to YouTube, Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald and executive producer Ridley Scott created a 90-minute feature film that offers an entertaining, surprising and moving view of life on earth.

After a theatrical release in countries around the world including appearances at the Sundance, Berlin, SXSW and Sydney film festivals, Life in a Day is finally coming home to YouTube—in its entirety, for free.

Starting today you can watch Life in a Day on YouTube, available with subtitles in 25 languages. So if you haven’t seen it yet or want to relive the experience that The Times of London considers “a thrilling piece of cinema” and the Washington Post called “a profound achievement,” now’s your chance.



If you’d like to own Life in a Day, a DVD is also available. You can find more details about this, and the whole project, on the film’s official YouTube channel.

Wonderful things happen when cool technology meets great entertainment. Cable television expanded our viewing possibilities from just a handful of channels to hundreds, and brought us some of the most defining media experiences of the last few decades-- think MTV, ESPN and CNN. Today, the web is bringing us entertainment from an even wider range of talented producers, and many of the defining channels of the next generation are being born, and watched, on YouTube.

Today we’re announcing that even more talented creators and original entertainment will soon join YouTube’s existing channel lineup, including channels created by well-known personalities and content producers from the TV, film, music, news, and sports fields, as well as some of the most innovative up-and-coming media companies in the world and some of YouTube’s own existing partners. These channels will have something for everyone, whether you’re a mom, a comedy fan, a sports nut, a music lover or a pop-culture maven.

Our goal with this channels expansion, along with the grants and educational programs we’ve launched in the past year, is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again. And for advertisers, these channels will represent a new way to engage and reach their global consumers.

The first of these new original channels will appear on YouTube starting next month and will continue over the next year. They’ll be available to you on any internet-connected device, anywhere in the world, with all the interactivity and social features of YouTube built right in.

Halloween weekend is here! If you’re still looking for the perfect costume, the YouTube community has your last-minute Halloween costume tips and tricks.

Nicki Minaj is the fourth fastest rising costume search this year (check out the Official Google Blog for more details) and a subject of several YouTube video tutorials. Check out this playlist of videos that show how to channel your inner pop star, including Nicki, Katy Perry/Russell Brand (at the same time!), Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and her alter-ego Jo Calderone.



If you’re on a budget or crunched for time this Halloween, YouTube partners have some last minute, DIY Halloween ideas for you. Quick, easy, recession proof ideas include: a 30-second ninja made from just a t-shirt, a “cute” nerd, a fierce 5-minute street fighter, a spooky ‘head on a platter,’ and a few ideas you can pick up at your local thrift shop.



Convinced 50 of your closest friends to show up as a flock of Angry Birds (Halloween 2011’s fastest rising costume search) or a coven of vampires, but don’t have the costumes worked out yet? Checkout these makeup tutorials for an easy Angry Bird look, an Oscar-worthy Black Swan, male and female vampires, and a scary rotting zombie.



Finally, if your goal is to stand out from the crowds of Kate Middletons and Jersey Shore cast members, then try dressing as a YouTube star from this year. Coldplay. Performing live. In a bullfighting ring. In Madrid, Spain.

It might sound like a dream, but it’s not. It’s happening today, and thanks to American Express UNSTAGED in partnership with VEVO and YouTube, you get to watch it as it happens at youtube.com/ColdplayVEVO, starting at 1 pm PT. This is the first time UNSTAGED series has streamed from an international venue, and fans from Argentina to Zimbabwe will be able to tune in and watch.



Coldplay is one of the world’s most successful bands. They started out as a college duo in 1996, saddled with the unpromising name Pectoralz (which they later changed to Starfish before settling on Coldplay). The group was initially influenced by bands like Travis, but as they added members they found their own sound, one which quickly earned them a label deal and radio play on BBC 1 (as well as comparisons to U2). Their first radio hit, “Shiver,” showcased the band’s ringing guitars and Chris Martin’s nimble falsetto.



The band has an uncanny knack for crafting songs that feel both momentous and intimate, as if Martin is crooning his innermost feelings to you while the band translates those feelings into swelling rock orchestration. Coldplay’s songs are often deceptively simple -- they have been called “hypnotic” by more than one reviewer -- but they frequently induce a palpable sense of catharsis, building and then dissipating tension. Nowhere was this more evident than in their 2008 single “Viva La Vida.”



In tandem with their incredible successes -- seven Grammys, six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and over 50 million albums sold -- the group has remained true to their core ideals. They’ve consistently refused to license their music for advertisements, and they continue to donate 10% of the band’s profits to charity.

As Halloween approaches, youtube.com/music is getting overtaken by a succession of demons, vampires, ghosts and ghouls. (Oh my!) We launch our creepy tunes today with a comical video and playlist from singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, who unveils his love for all things black metal, and then we explore a musical movement that bases itself on the notion of being haunted.

Ryan Adams Goes Goth
The alt-country crooner returned earlier this month with a lovely album that re-establishes him as a roots musician worth listening to. While the singer-songwriter loves him some acoustic guitars and heartfelt songs, when Halloween approaches, Adams cranks up the death metal and consorts with demons from other dimensions. F'reals.



Introducing Hauntology
We thought it was time to explore a genre that’s based on, as some have said, the logic of the ghost, and the uneasy coexistence of the past and the present. “Hauntology” is music that flickers at the edge of your vision and jostles lost memories. Named for a concept first introduced by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, hauntological music is what it sounds like: music that's haunted by the past, invaded by spectres even as it strives to live in the present. There's no easy definition, nor is it a neatly defined musical movement. That said, many artists (particularly British electronic artists) fit into its wavering confines. Check out some of the best, spookiest videos this genre-that's-not-a-genre has to offer.

This week’s featured video has no overdubs and no Auto-Tune...and we can guarantee you nobody’s taking their shirt off. But don’t let that dissuade you from watching the debut video from this bluegrass/classical supergroup. Yes, you read that right. The great cellist Yo-Yo Ma teams with Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers; Edgar Meyer, who is easily one of the world’s greatest bass players; and fiddler Stuart Duncan for an album. “Attaboy” captures the group’s synergy live, as well as the beautiful home it finds between the artists’ respective genres. Because sometimes all you need is good music. Here it is.

Every day we see Internet users around the world finding new ways to use technology to help bring about political, economic and social change. It’s exciting to see people exercise their rights to freely express themselves and access information across borders and media -- rights first enshrined in Article 19 of the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights long before the Internet existed.

Far less clear, however, are the long-term implications of rapid technological development for human rights: What’s the balance between people using social media to empower themselves and governments using it to oppress their own citizens? How do governments create national policies when the Internet breaks borders? And what role do companies have in enabling or protecting the free exchange of ideas?

These questions and more will be addressed at the first ever Silicon Valley Human Rights Conference, taking place in San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25 and 26. Activists, academics, and analysts will meet with engineers, entrepreneurs, and executives for discussion about how and when technology can advance human rights.

Several Googlers from the public policy team, as well as speakers from YouTube, will be participating on panels and in roundtable discussions on topics from free expression and government regulation to transparency and intermediary liability. This is part of an ongoing series sharing tips from the YouTube Creator Playbook, a resource of best practices and tips you can start using on your channel and videos right away.

There is no substitute for great content, and when you make great videos, your audience will want more. This post will teach you about frequency of new content on your channel and how you communicate when it will be coming out, to help build a loyal and consistent audience on YouTube.

Upload Frequency
Uploading frequently will help YouTube surface your videos to more potential viewers, and hopefully lead to more viewership. For subscribers, having something new for them every week will get them coming back to your channel more and more, and new viewers are more likely to become part of your recurring audience if they see that your channel is actively creating great videos.

A typical frequency we’ve seen among successful YouTubers is a video a week. But making a great video takes time, so it’s important to find ways to get more videos from the same amount of production efforts. For example, many successful YouTube channels create behind-the-scenes videos, comment response videos interact with fans, or other formats like these.



Schedule
Releasing videos on a recurring schedule helps build a structure to your show that an audience can rely on. Based on your audience and your content, decide what the right release schedule is for your channel: What’s your ‘prime-time’ of the week?

Then, make it clear to the audience when and how often episodes are released. This way your fans will know when to expect your content, and can look forward to your next piece of creative genius. Ways you can do this include saying your programming schedule in your videos, in the episode description in text and branding on your channel. FreddieW put it best when he wrote that “A consistent audience requires consistent content.” If you want your audience to come back week after week, you’ll need to do your part and make sure they have new great videos to watch when they do.

Our scrappy engineers have still been hard at work to make your experience on YouTube even better, so we decided to resurrect this series and share a bunch of our recent changes.

Updated Video End-Screen: We’ve redesigned the end-screen that appears directly after a video finishes playing to make it even easier for you to find the next great video to watch.



Enhanced Playlist Bar: To make the experience of watching videos in a playlist better, we’ve updated the interface for video playlists, making the individual video details more visible from within the playlist and making the next, previous, auto-play and shuffle buttons more distinct.



Updated YouTube.com/Charts page: If you want to keep track of the latest and greatest videos on YouTube or know which videos have had true staying power, check out our updated YouTube Charts page. You can browse through the most viewed (standard and HD), most liked, and top favorited videos of today, this week, this month and of all time. Pulling from our ‘As Seen On’ feature, you’ll also be able to see what videos are being shared and discussed across the web. For those of you with truly niche interests, you can view charts by categories like “How to & Style” and “Pets & Animals,” and also see the most subscribed channels.



WeVideo Now on YouTube: To give you even more options to edit and touch up your videos, we’ve added the cloud-based video editing platform WeVideo as a partner to YouTube.com/Create.

YouTube Localized in More Countries and Languages: We recently added Kenya, the Philippines and Singapore to the list of countries where YouTube is localized, bringing this total number to 35. You can check out what’s popular in these countries by changing your location setting, which you can find by scrolling to the bottom of YouTube.com and clicking on Location. To further support content creators in these countries, we also launched the YouTube Partner Program here as well. Want to practice your Estonian, Icelandic, Basque, Galician, or Udu? We’ve added these new languages, making the YouTube interface available in the vernacular in 51 languages.



Smart Subscribe button: We’ve added a "smart" subscribe button on the video watch page, that will let you know if you’re already subscribed to the channel of the video you’re watching. If you so, it’ll say "Subscribed!". If not, you’ll see the standard “Subscribe” button allowing you to do so.

Carnegie explains how TED and YouTube are teaming up for the second year to present a challenge called 'Ads Worth Spreading.'

Last year, TED kicked off a challenge to the advertising industry called Ads Worth Spreading, our global search for innovation, ingenuity and intelligence in advertising. The winners can be seen on the front page of Show & Tell, YouTube’s gallery of clever and effective creative marketing.

This year, we are delighted to announce that we’re now accepting entries to TED’s Ads Worth Spreading initiative through a channel on YouTube. The YouTube channel will help promote and showcase submissions, as well as spark conversation. Even if you’re not an advertiser, you can visit the channel and comment on your favorite campaigns. Which ads are thought-provoking, funny, honest, warm, informative or creatively brilliant? We want your feedback, and the channel is our medium for hearing your voice.

One of the most common questions we’re asked about Ads Worth Spreading is: “Why? Why does TED support an initiative around advertising?” TED’s Curator Chris Anderson explains it this way -- “TED’s mission is ‘ideas worth spreading.’ The dream behind this initiative is to find companies that want to communicate ideas to their consumers in the same way that TED wants to communicate with its audience. What makes ideas powerful is that they have a life of their own; an idea can reset someone’s worldview and even begin a domino effect as they pass it on to friends.”

TED will curate a final selection of ten campaigns from 2011. The results will be announced at the TED2012 conference in Long Beach, Calif. in March, and showcased on TED.com and YouTube.

Both take existing material and tweak it -- sometimes until it’s unrecognizable. And, as independent musicians and the people who love them head to New York City this week for CMJ, check back to youtube.com/music every day this week to see a video from the artists participating in our Indie Artists Summit. With the launch of our YouTube Merch Store, there's never been a better time to be a musician on YouTube.

Found Footage = Music Video?
Experimental filmmakers have used found footage for many years. But increasingly music video directors are adopting the practice, culling source material from decades of forgotten recordings and making short films for musicians that are by turns amusing, creepy and beautiful. Case in point: Mayer Hawthorne’s recent video for “A Long Time,” which nabs tape from a ‘70s-era Detroit dance television show. Or check out Ratatat’s video for “Drugs,” which repurposes stock Getty footage to unsettling effect. Ambient heroes Boards of Canada even turn to NASA to create their hypnotic video for “Dayvan.”



The 50 Best Remixes
eMusic’s staff take us through some of the greatest remixes of all time this week, sharing everything from dub classics to contemporary hip-hop bangers. The remix is now one of the dominant facts of modern music, and the mixing board and its add-ons are arguably the most important instruments in pop music today. But don’t just take it from us. As eMusic says, “Who invented the remix? Lots of people — and people are still reinventing it all the time. That's the point of remixing: proof that a piece of music is never finished as long as someone can tweak the parts till they shine brighter, move differently, or resemble something else altogether.”

At 15 minutes long, today’s featured video is more of a mini-documentary than a music video. Filmmaker Michal Shapiro interviews Banning Eyre, the internationally-renowned co-founder of Afropop and champion of African music. The video begins with personal history, as Eyre talks about his early days studying with Malian guitar masters -- but it quickly moves into stunning footage of one master guitarist: Aboubacar “Badian” Diabate. Diabate’s technique is unparallelled -- he’s able to transmit the delicacy of other African stringed instruments like the kora to his instrument. Prepare to be ravished.

Since launching the first YouTube NextUp, we’ve been working to supercharge the careers of partners from around the world, and now we’re expanding the program even further. Today we’re kicking off two new YouTube Next Creator Programs to highlight the stars of tomorrow on YouTube today: YouTube Next Chef and YouTube Next Trainer.

Each program will have sixteen participants who take part in a three month virtual class held on Google+ Hangouts. Update: Added info on new feature for indie labels.

With 800 million people per month coming to YouTube, you have a pretty big stage to share your music, and now we’re adding features to also make YouTube your box office, merchandise table and music store.

The Merch Store
We’re launching a feature called the Merch Store that will allow YouTube partners to offer fans merchandise directly on your channel. Fans will be able to buy artists’ merchandise, digital downloads, concert tickets and even unique experiences like meetups. These features are made possible through affiliates like Topspin for merchandise, concert tickets and experiences; Songkick for concerts; and iTunes and Amazon for music downloads. We’ll be rolling out the Merch Store to music partners globally over the coming weeks, and here's an early look:



Online Indie Label Signups
We’ve also made a few changes to make it easier for indie labels to become YouTube partners and share revenue when their music is played, even in user generated content. The signup form is available here.

Director Joel Schumacher sat down to talk with us about what lead to the decision to release Trespass on YouTube as well as in theaters, experiences in the film industry and his cast-driven films, which you can see with our YouTube Movie Extras. As Joel says, “I know certain people in my industry are furious about … their films being shown in anyway than they were supposed to be meant to be seen [in theaters]. However, there’s no stopping technology.”

While YouTube has been available in the Philippines' native Tagalog language since 2010, we have opened a new chapter for YouTube in the Philippines with the launch of a fully localized version of the platform.

As we were launching this new Philippines homepage, we also had the launch of two official government channels from current President Benigno Aquino III at his official channel and news channel. Through his representative Secretary Ricky Carandang, President Aquino also announced his plans to have a livestreamed chat with us with our YouTube World View program on November 4, in partnership with ABS-CBN. President Aquino will be the first Head of State in Asia to participate in the program, and you can ask submit and vote on questions via Google Moderator starting October 21.

This new Philippines homepage spotlights the most relevant videos to Filipinos, as well as more content from an array of Filipino partners such as broadcasters ABS-CBN, GMA Network Inc., TV5, record labels VIVA Records/Vicor Records, Pinoy Tuner, Star Records, and production company Oak3. If you’re in the Philippines, the site will automatically detect your location and send you to the Philippines page, but anyone interested in Filipino content can get there by just selecting “The Philippines” at the bottom of the page in the Location section.

At the launch event in Manila, we also debuted a video interview from one of our favorite Filipino YouTube success stories, Charice Pempengco.



Filipinos have already been using YouTube to make a name for themselves across the globe. Rock band Journey chose Filipino singer-songwriter Arnel Pineda to be their new vocalist after seeing videos of him belting out their hits on YouTube. And of course, the immaculately choreographed prisoner dance routines for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Bebot” brought world renown to the uniformed inmates of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

With the YouTube Partner Program also opening in the Philippines today, we hope that talented Filipino video creators like the next Charices will sign up and start turning their passions into their careers.

Can plants survive beyond Earth? Can proteins observed in space reveal the mysteries of life? Science experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS) could unlock the answers and now we're giving you a chance to ask the questions. Today, we’re launching YouTube Space Lab with Lenovo, in cooperation with Space Adventures, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Space Lab is a new galactic channel on YouTube that will lift off from your laptop, taking you to interesting and awesome videos from around the world... and beyond.



Interested students are invited to come up with an idea for a science experiment that can be conducted in space and upload a video explaining it to YouTube by December 7, 2011. The YouTube community and a panel of distinguished scientists, astronauts and expert judges, including Professor Stephen Hawking, will pick the best ones. If your video is selected, it will be performed aboard the ISS and live streamed on YouTube to the world in 2012.

We'll also throw in some out-of-this-world prizes for the winners: like ZERO-G flights, Lenovo IdeaPad laptops and your choice of either a trip to Tanegashima Island, Japan, to watch your experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS, or—once you’re 18—a one-of-a-kind astronaut training experience in Star City, Russia, the training center for Russian cosmonauts. While it’s fun to sit back and watch your favorite videos on YouTube, you can get even more from the platform simply by logging in, which is why we’re expanding the features available to you by allowing you to log into YouTube with your Google Account.

If you are logged in to your existing Google Account, you can now choose to personalize your YouTube experience, where YouTube will suggest videos and channels based on what you’ve watched and liked in the past. You can also “like” videos, purchase or rent a latest release from YouTube.com/Movies, add videos to your own “Watch Later” queue, share videos across various platforms, connect YouTube with one of your social networks, as well as access and manage your watch history (so you don’t forget that amazing video you recently watched). Of course, all of the privacy controls always available on YouTube remain unchanged, and you can read more about this here.

Want to try these features but don’t yet have a Google account? You can create one here, or as always you can create a YouTube account here.

We think having access to these features will make your experience on YouTube even better. Still, there are a bunch of benefits you’ll only get by signing directly into YouTube with your own YouTube account, like allowing you to upload and share your videos with the world, comment on videos, rate and make video responses, or build video playlists to watch and share (hint: great for dance parties). Not to mention that signing in will ensure that the recommended videos we suggest to you will be better and more relevant based on your subscriptions and activity.

Back in May we brought new release movies and more for rent to YouTube in the US. Last month, we took it to Canada. Now, over a thousand full-length feature films from major Hollywood and British studios are available for rent in the UK at youtube.com/movies.

We’ve got some cracking films to keep everyone entertained through the upcoming winter months and beyond. From blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Reservoir Dogs, to new releases such as Hanna, Fast Five, and Red Riding Hood, and even British classics like Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you can find many of your favourite films in high quality available to rent now at youtube.com/movies.

There’s always more to explore on YouTube. Many movie pages also feature YouTube Movie Extras with free behind-the-scenes videos, cast interviews, parodies, clips and remixes from YouTube’s unique community of content creators. Over time we'll also be adding additional videos and features to YouTube Movie Extras so that you can get even more into movies on YouTube.

Britain has a long history of cinema, starting from the first moving pictures being developed on celluloid film in the UK. Now British film buffs can be part of the digital revolution too, at youtube.com/movies.

Good news: clips from some of your favorite Telemundo shows are coming to YouTube in the U.S. starting today on the new Telemundo YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/telemundo. Weekly novela summaries will be uploaded daily to the channel and will include content with English subtitles. There’ll also be a new mun2 channel www.youtube.com/mun2 with original bilingual videos in English and Spanish.



Telemundo’s programming will begin appearing this week, so be sure to check-in to their channel www.youtube.com/telemundo twice a week.

It’s a new way of writing history. Today, we are joining with Germany’s public TV broadcaster, ZDF, German weekly magazine "Stern", and other German marquee brands such as Bertelsmann, Robert Bosch, Daimler and Gruner+Jahr, to launch “Memory of the Nation” (“Gedächtnis der Nation”) - a video platform dedicated to presenting the “collective memories” of German people throughout the 20th and the beginning of the 21st Century.



The project takes inspiration from the Shoah Foundation in Jerusalem, which records the experiences of Holocaust survivors. Similarly, "Memory of the Nation" provides more than a traditional historical archive. Thousands of prominent and ordinary people are being interviewed, and their personal accounts turn abstract history into real, emotional experiences.




This project is special, not just because of its content, but also because it is universally accessible via the Internet. Viewers would be unable to peruse their personal histories via traditional media in their own time, and on their own terms. Here, viewers choose what they want to watch - and are able to add personal details and observations to the stories.

Both young and old are invited to contribute. A ZDF team criss-crossing Germany in a "century bus” already has recorded more than 8000 hours of video interviews with eyewitnesses of historical events. Viewers are encouraged to upload their own videos through a second YouTube channel “Our History” (“Unsere Geschichte”). This interactivity ensures the platform will become a living resource for disseminating and learning about German history.




Google Germany and YouTube are excited to support this unique project. We have created a special interface for this channel that allows users to view the videos on a timeline, as well as search by topic, eyewitness or personality as well as specific keywords.

A non-profit group called "The Memory of the Nation" is spearheading the project. Germany’s Federal President Christian Wulff is patron. The Board of Trustees includes personalities such as former Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher and literary critic icon Marcel Reich-Ranicki. We’re delighted that so many prominent players in German society have come together and embraced the Internet to increase understanding of German history and culture.

The new YouTube Politics site will feature the latest campaign ads, parodies, gotchas, and speeches, offering you a 360-view of the election.



Wondering which candidate is surging and which candidate is falling flat on YouTube? The channel will also let you take a deep dive into each candidate’s YouTube stats, so you can see which one has the most video views, subscribers and shares, as well as how they stack up against each other. And from each candidate’s dashboard, you can subscribe to their YouTube channel to receive regular updates and videos from the campaign trail.

There’s a long way to run in the 2012 electoral race, but one thing’s for sure - there will be some unforgettable YouTube moments along the way. Youtube.com/politics will help you keep up with the story.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum has created the 9/11 Memorial YouTube channel, and they’re requesting your videos for an archive that will be part of the 9/11 Memorial Museum scheduled to open September 2012. The Memorial and Museum is the not-for-profit corporation created to oversee the design, fundraising, programming and operations of the Memorialand Museum at the World Trade Center.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani offers background about the project and a request for you to record a "silent video tribute" to create a living memorial for the Museum.



“Through this new YouTube channel, people around the world will have an opportunity to join our mission to document the history of 9/11 by sharing their personal experiences,” 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said. “This channel is an example of the many ways the National September 11 Memorial Museum is ensuring the history we all lived through is never forgotten.”

This project was inspired by the 9/11 tribute album "Ten Years On." The album is a collection of songs compiled by Welsh recording artist Jem in remembrance of 9/11, from artists like John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Alanis Morissette, Johnny Cash, and more. What’s happening on youtube.com/music this week? We dig into two facets of Chicago’s music scene, starting with Wilco’s indie-Americana explorations and then exploring the future-forward sound of juke. And then we go even farther afield...come with us!


Wilco curation
The iconic Chicago band Wilco have just released one of the most acclaimed albums of their career -- and possibly of 2011 (time will tell) -- in The Whole Love. The hook-filled album also stretches at its sonic space, artfully scarring its easy beauty with shards of noise and the occasional extended guitar jam. And yes, they’ve made some pretty lovely videos to go along with it. We invited the band to take over the YouTube homepage today, and they flood it with music you might not ordinarily see there. Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim. The inimitable Bill Withers. They gravitate to music that endures...not unlike their own.





Chicago Juke
While Wilco reps one aspect of Chi-town (its indie-Americana side), we turned to a completely different set of musicians to explore another facet of the city’s music scene. Maybe you've heard about juking. It's a dance scene; it's a musical style. It was born in Chicago, and it takes house music and hip-hop and strips them down, cranking up the BPMs and muddying the production values so it feels as if it could have come out of any corner of the world. People get wild to it; the footwork style has become hugely inspirational to dancers around the country. Even overseas dubstep producers have been influenced by the scene in recent years. Dakha Brakha “Vesna” Speaking of going local, you can’t get much more local than Dakha Brakha -- it’s just that the locale is a bit farther afield. (The Ukraine, to be exact.) Dakha Brakha play Ukranian folk music, but they do it with such art-house panache that it feels avant-garde instead of old. In “Vesna,” the band’s most recent video, they emerge from Ukraine’s forests in full traditional garb, setting up and performing in modern-day Kiev. The video builds slowly, but by the time it ends, modern life feels as if it’s been briefly transformed.

This is part of an ongoing series sharing tips from the YouTube Creator Playbook, a resource of best practices and tips you can start using on your channel and videos right away.

If you’ve got great videos to share, help your channel grow by letting people know how they can subscribe and see them all. Subscribers can become your core audience for views, likes and comments, and especially your first wave of feedback on your videos. Here’s a few things to consider as your looking at your subscribers:

Provide great content on a regular schedule that viewers won’t want to miss. It gives your something to look forward to, and new fans can know what to expect.

Ask them! If your videos include a personality or someone who talks directly to the audience, just ask your viewers to subscribe to your channel. Don’t over do it, and have a good reason for why they should. Here’s a few ideas how to do it:



Use Annotations: Add annotations to your videos that link to subscribe buttons for your channel. This is a good way to encourage your viewers to subscribe if you aren’t on camera to ask them directly.

Make it easy to subscribe on your channel page. You already have one subscribe button on your channel page, but if you build it into your banner image and other parts of the channel design you give viewers more opportunities to subscribe. You can also share the subscription love with your fellow YouTubers and cross-promote other channels by enabling the ‘other channels’ module. Here’s an example from College Humor that shows related channels for their audience:
